You’ve got to laugh. Maybe just not in church.

Don’t you hate it when something makes you laugh at the most inopportune time?

For me, most recently, this happened Sunday when I was in, of all places, church.

Regular readers of my blog (that person knows who they are) know my left eye is prosthetic. It’s really not that big of a deal (hey, I get half the red-eye in photos).

Members of the choir I belong to at Trinity Reformed Church in North Plainfield and I have a good chuckle about it when we have to sing songs such as “We Lift Our Eyes to the Lord” and “His Eye is On the Sparrow.”

Now, the scriptures rarely make me laugh. (Especially when I’m asleep during the reading). But, this past Sunday, one of our congregants was assigned to read a passage from Mark. When she got to Mark 9:47, I almost lost it. It reads, “And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into Hell.”

While I love it when she’s in church, I was glad my fellow choir member, Beth, wasn’t there, or I know I would have burst out laughing.

As it was, I had to bite my lower lip to stifle the laughter, and bow my head to avoid looking at the reader. (Maybe they thought I was praying!)

At least they didn't look to me for a demonstration.
